Google Translate

In the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Douglas Adams famously created a fish you stick in your ear so that you can instantly understand anything said to you in any language.

The future isn’t quite here, and it certainly isn’t fish shaped, but Google translate is an a app that translates languages, this is a fantastic app for people who do not speak English as a first language and those that like to travel. The app was originally designed to translate text, but the newer versions can even translate audio, allowing the user to talk in one language and have the phone speak it in another. It also supports translation via the camera on a smartphone using augmented reality. Simply point the camera at the text you want to translate and it shows you the text in the language of your choice. See the video for a demonstration:
