NHS One You Image

According to a recent YouGov poll, the most popular New Year’s resolutions for 2018 are as follows:

1. Eat better

2. Exercise more

3. Spend less money

4. Self care (i.e. get more sleep)

5. Read more books

This will be split into two posts, the first looking at the health and fitness resolutions, along with the second at spending less money.

Eat Better

The internet is full of advice on eating better and losing weight, some of it good and some of it not so good. One of the best places to start is the NHS One You website:

https://www.nhs.uk/oneyou

There is a lot of info on how to live a healthier lifestyle and an excellent section on how to start with a healthy diet, without the fads and promises of super quick weight loss.

They also have an Easy Meals app, which allows you to search recipes based on meal times and even creates a shopping list for you. The app is available for either iOS or android:

Exercise More

The One You site has recommendations and apps to help you get more exercise. The active 10 app tracks your walking and encourages you to be active for 10 minutes a day at the start, this a great way to begin with a healthier, fitter lifestyle.

For those that want to exercise more, there is the Couch to 5k, an app designed to get you from the sofa to being able to run 5k in just 9 weeks. It is a series of podcasts that you play on your phone, alongside your music There are three runs a week, building up slowly.

Authors note:

I started the Couch to 5k about 7 weeks ago. I had not run in at least 30 years, so thought I would really struggle with it, but the easy start and constant encouragement as you run has been fantastic. I highly recommend this app.

Self Care

Again the One You website has information on reducing your stress levels and boosting your confidence. This coupled with eating better and exercising more is a great way of feeling better about yourself and getting better sleep.

Read more books

If you have a smartphone you may already have ab app on it that allows you to read books, both apple and Android have native book reading apps, sometimes these are preinstalled on phones.

If not the Amazon Kindle app is a good one for reading as it has a reader, a library system and a huge marketplace of books to download and read.

Kindle App, free to download, in app purchases.

Whilst reading on a phone or tablet doesn’t replace the feel of a proper book it does allow you to find something to read instantly.
