Website Redesign Image

As I have recently redesigned this website I thought I would share details on how this site was built.

Digital Champion is built with WordPress, an open source content management system. This means you install the WordPress software on a web server and then add content, such as images and pages to it through WordPress.

There are numerous advantages to creating website in this way, the main one is that WordPress takes care of all the tricky stuff, like scaling the website to different screen sizes and allows the upload and publication of text and images without having to write a lot of code.

WordPress is the most commonly used content management system and in April 2018 it was estimated that over 30% of the top 10 million websites were created with it.

The reason I like WordPress is the fact that it can be customised easily, if you want to add a feature you simply find a suitable plugin that does it for you. If you want to change the look of the site you can simply install a new theme. To do these things using HTML would mean hours or even days of coding.

Creating websites in this way offers a great deal of freedom, but to do so it means purchasing a domain name, in this case digital-champion.co.uk and a hosting package from a hosting company. This does mean creating a website this way incurs a financial cost, but I think this is worth it in the freedom it gives you.

For people wanting to start a website this is a very simple way of doing it, there are lots of tutorials and guidance online to show you how. This is helped by the popularity of WordPress, as if you are facing an issue the chances are someone has been in the same position before you.

If the thought of creating a website using WordPress is too daunting for you there are other options. For those wanting to create a blog there is Blogger (https://www.blogger.com/) and the online version of WordPress (https://wordpress.com/) . The two different versions of WordPress can be confusing, the online version is .com and the self hosted version is .org.

If you are looking to create a personal or business website then there are a few “drag and drop” website builders. These allow you to add content to the pages and move it around to get the design you want. The popular ones are: Wix (https://www.wix.com) , Weebly (https://www.weebly.com/uk/websites) and Squarespace (https://www.squarespace.com/).
